At America, a Viking horde arrives in 813 CE, where they are greeted by hostilities and force them to leave. To be able to get home, they start to make offerings to Odin. Leaving the funeral, the Technical Boy, who demands to understand about Wednesday abducts Shadow. Technical Boy orders his men to kill Shadow and they carry on to hang him. The noose eventually snaps, freeing Shadow, while an unknown assailant kills his attackers.

In 1697, on a slave ship, a slave begins to pray. A appears and begins a monologue associating once they arrive at America, each of the horrid things that can happen to them. At Anansi's urging, the slaves free themselves and burn the ship to kill the slavers. Shadow faces Wednesday, but consents to continue working for double wages although in the present. He leaves with Wednesday, after storing his own and Laura's possessions. Shadow meets one of the New Gods who wants him to align together with her, Media while shopping in a store. After refusing, he and Wednesday travel to Chicago where they arrive at an apartment belonging to three sisters and a worker, who has a dark history with Wednesday. Czernobog plays checkers with Shadow with a wager: Czernobog will go with them, if Shadow wins; but if Shadow loses, he will be killed by Czernobog with a hammer. The fundamental assumption of the novel is that gods and mythological creatures exist because people believe in them. Immigrants to the Usa brought gods and spirits. As people's beliefs waned, the ability of these mythological beings has decreased. New gods have risen, reflecting America's obsessions with celebrity, media, technology, and drugs .

Shadow is a taciturn convict who's released from prison early when his wife, Laura Moon, and best friend Robbie Burton die in a car crash, leaving him alone in the world. Bereaved, he takes a job as a bodyguard for a mystical conman, Mr. Wednesday, who appears to know more about Shadow's life than he lets on. Shadow and Wednesday travel seeing with Wednesday's uncommon colleagues and acquaintances until Shadow learns that Wednesday is in fact an incarnation of Odin the All-Father. Wednesday is recruiting American indications of the Old Gods of ancient mythology, whose powers have waned as their believers have decreased in number, to take part within an epic fight from the New American Gods - manifestations of contemporary life and technology, such as the Web, media, and modern method of transport. Shadow flips the coin into his wife's grave, inadvertently bringing her back from your dead as a semi-living revenant.

Wednesday and shadow attempt to muster the Old Gods to fight with the new, but most are unwilling to get involved. The New Gods abduct Shadow, but Laura saves him, killing several Men in Black in the method. Wednesday hides Shadow in the sleepy Great Lakes community of Lakeside, and then first with a few stray Egyptian gods who run a funeral parlor in Illinois. Shadow meets many colorful locals in Lakeside including Hinzelmann, an old-timer who spins tall tales, and Chad Mulligan, the workaday local chief of police. Shadow suspects something is not exactly correct in regards to the town although Lakeside is tranquil and idyllic. Lakeside is mysteriously resistant while neighboring communities turn into ghost towns. Disappearances of kids occur with unusual frequency. Shadow is unable to investigate busily traveling with Wednesday across America, meeting the likes of Johnny Appleseed and the goddess Easter to solicit their help. They are pursued all the while from the Men in Black, specially Mr. Town, who attributes Shadow for the passing of his pals.
