As the name suggests, the film occurs prior to the events of this very first Annabelle film and covers the way the doll became dangerous and creepy. That part of the film works well enough, but much better, Annabelle: Generation also comes with a batch of exceptionally likable and engaging new personalities. Sister Charlotte, a nun searching to get a set of orphan women needing somewhere to stay. Lucky for them, a doll maker and his wife offer to take them in after losing their own daughter in an auto crash years prior. But soon after moving into the house, strange things begin to happen and a malicious force targets one of the young girls, Janice.

Janice and her very best friend Lindaappear to be the youngest of the group, and the two get picked on by the older girls quite a bit. Wilson and Bateman are both exceptional in the roles and have a great deal of chemistry with each other, therefore it's impossible not to root for them. Earning even more sympathy for Janice, she suffered from polio and has a tricky time walking on one of her legs. You feel for her, but the movie doesn't treat it like a pity party. Both Janice and Linda are extremely smart, capable characters. There's a severe threat lurking in the house and they might be at a disadvantage in some respects, but you care about them and also believe they have an opportunity to beat this thing, and that keeps the suspense sky-high throughout.

She's got a lot of credits to her name but nothing particularly substantial, so hopefully Annabelle: Creation will lead to many more opportunities for her on the monitor. The pairing of Bateman and Wilson is essential to the success of the movie. In terms of Annabelle herself, Sandberg appears to have taken a cue from The Conjuringand Insidious, particularly in regards to shot composition and the score, and it winds up serving the title villain very well.

The strongest component of Annabelle: Creation that comes close to being a complete failure is the doll maker and his wife. There's nothing wrong with LaPaglia and Otto's performances, but it's tough for their characters to produce much of an impression when they're almost completely ignored for the majority of the movie. But fortunately this matter is solely problematic for their characters -- not for the Annabelle mythology or for Janice and Linda's story.
