Ever since the Bourne trilogy came along and jacked up the spy-thriller genre, so many movies have attempted to recapture its own sweaty-palmed magic. However, not one of these, including two more movies using "Bourne" from the name, have quite attained those high standards. The most recent competition, Unlocked, breeds to pull off the very same moves. However, where Supremacyand Ultimatum specifically were pure caffeine, this is similar to herbal tea. Regardless of the impressive cast, it seldom manages to quicken the heartbeat.

The sole original-ish twist, though Steven Soderbergh beat them to the punch with 2011's Gina Carano automobile Haywire, would be to produce the hero feminine. Central intelligence operative Alice Racine gets a fast backstory setting up her as a distressed bad-ass: she is a former adolescent runaway who once struck a teacher's arm, of course for good reason. More recently, she had been traumatized with a bridge-based terror assault in 2012, while she was stationed at Paris. It is a fairly rote set up, but Noomi Rapace, ever proficient at playing emotionally lacerated personalities, brings heft into the function.

The supporting characters are somewhat less powerful. But neither functionality is very likely to linger long in the brain. Douglas is at a small number of scenes within an avuncular spymaster, dispensing such dull intellect clichés as, "Langley's likely to want to attract you in," and, "I am too old for this shit." Malkovich, meanwhile, as a generally Malkovichian grouchy centarl intelligence leader, delivers nearly all of his lines over Skype. On the other hand, he's got an exceptional personality title: Bob Hunter. Subverting expectations, at no stage in the runtime does Bob Hunter eventually become Bob Hunted.

These roles are only forgettable, but among the movie's major missteps comes because it presents Jack, a cheeky-chappie, movie game-loving East End burglar that, for some reason, teams up with Alice. So needless to say the manufacturers called on Orlando Bloom. The Canterbury-born celebrity gives it a great go, but the personality is inherently ridiculous as well as the casting does not help, especially with Bloom needed to market lines such as, "I really like a tagine."

Unlocked goes for grit more than gloss, and it sometimes works: a lo-fi interrogation scene, complete with may of Irn-Bru, feels genuine and stressed. After a time, however, you begin to beg for the jittery hurry and bravura of Paul Greengrass' camera motions.

This substance - bioweapons, dastardly imams, double-agent shows - has been so well-mined lately that a story needs something up its sleeve to conquer audience fatigue. This has a few large, eccentric twists, but they are not actually enough.
